Chengdu (November 28-30)
On the Monday night we set off for Chengdu, a city south-west of Xi’an. We were looking very forward to visiting the large Panda conservation park in Chengdu and convinced Lu to come with us. We took another over-night sleeper train (no drama this time) and Lu spent much of the trip teaching us how to use all of the cool functions on our camera. She is a very talented photographer and we learned so many neat tricks!
When we arrived in Chengdu, we stayed in a very Tibetan area of town. There were some amazing markets and little Tibetan shops everywhere. We walked down Ancient Street, which had some cute ponds, mini waterfalls and little places to eat. Very scenic! There we some really beautiful tea shops all along the roads, where you could try so many lovely flavours of tea.

On the second day, we went to see the PANDAS!!!!! They were so cute! And, to our disappointment, you could only hold them if you were willing to pay about $215 US dollars. Of course, we could not afford it. But it was soooooo amazing to see them eating and walking around! We were pretty close to all the action and it was truly a wonderful experience! And OMG, the baby pandas! SO cute!!!
In the afternoon, we rented some bikes with Lu and an Italian fellow we met at the Panda park, named Rocco. The four of us biked around Chengdu on the crappiest bikes in China! We waited about 45 minutes for our bikes to be fixed up before we could take them out, and then they all pretty much broke down on the trip! Rocco bike lost both its pedals! "Special", but so fun. We biked to a park that had a beautiful temple, and you could hear the monks chanting inside of it. Pretty cool stuff.
Rocco and Mark - two of a kind...
That night we had a party back in our dorm room, and the next day, off to Kangding!
Adorable Tibetan baby!

Hello dear Mark and Val!
Thank goodness you didn't tell me the "crazy lady" story on the phone right after it happend. I would have been worried and sleepless for nights after that! Just getting to read about it is enough for me, and I can almost relegate it to a "funny" (?) chapter in the tale of your travels (and the key word here is, almost!). But since I have talked to you a few times since this incident, I know that you are safe. What adventures you are having, and what sights you are seeing. It is truly a gift. Here at home we are preparing for Christmas, which will be very different without the two of you here. We love you and miss you very much. Take care of each other and I hope that your adventures will all be positive ones!
God Bless,
Mom

Hey guys!
WOW...crazy ladies exist everywhere in the world I guess...lol
I miss you both terribly and wish that you could both be there for Christmas. Mark, prancing around saying in a high whiny voice, "Juli, you ruined Christmas..HAHAHA" and so on. And Val taking that one HUGE shot of Scotch, while everyone else simply enjoyed sipping their drink. Oh, how both of you will be missed, only really because I wont be able to make fun and laugh at you... lol..ok but seriously, Mark our first Christmas EVER apart...single tear....I love you big bro, be careful and have fun. And Val, my first Christmas having a REAL sister, and I wont even get to benefit all the mushiness that sisters have during this time, I love you and I am so happy to have you in my life!
LOVE YOU BOTH!!!! xoxox
Happy Holidays

Hey mark and Val (well,we haven't met yet ;-)
I feel like I am invdaing your family space here, but what the heck ;-) I have just returned from India on friday. I have been blessed by having a local friend there, but reading your crazy lady story reminded me of stuff he was warning me about. Apparently there are some local scams of that sorts going on in India sometimes, so I hope this was the last time you have encountered something like that. Anyways, have a great christmas no mather where you're gonna be and let me know if you have plans to stop by in Japan. ;-)
Best wishes and good luck on your journeys
Jakub
P.S: I am sure you have utilized some of your Czech stories, with that girl ;-) seems like Czech people are just about everywhere.

Mark and Val,
WOW what a great way to follow your travels, we wish that we could be there with you. What a gift you are giving eachother in the start of your life together.
Your mom and dad are doing well and we are making sure that they are behaving. We are going to Cindy's for brunch tomorrow. We will try and keep them busy over the holidays.
Christal gave us some great news...We are going to be grandparents around the beginning of August....the September wedding may have to be postponed. We'll see.
Take good care of eachother and have a great time. From your friends in Williamstown.
